Valheim on PC: Complete Setup, Settings & Beginner Guide (2026)

Valheim is a Viking survival sandbox that peaked at over 500,000 concurrent Steam players in 2021 — one of the fastest games in history to reach that milestone. Developed by a five-person Swedish studio, Iron Gate AB, the game has received major free biome updates since launch: Mistlands, Ashlands, and the upcoming Deep North expansion. If you want to know how to get started, what settings to use, and how to survive your first nights in the Norse procedural world, this guide covers everything.

Can Your PC Run Valheim?

Valheim uses the Unity engine and is primarily CPU-bound, not GPU-bound. Large player-built structures (especially stone towers with many overlapping pieces) stress the CPU more than the GPU.

Best PC Settings for Valheim (2026)

Valheim's settings menu is simpler than most games — it does not have a shadow distance slider or complex GPU presets. These are the levers that matter most.

The Biggest FPS Lever: Fog Quality

Fog Quality (volumetric fog) is the most expensive setting relative to visual impact in Valheim. In foggy biomes (Swamp, Mistlands), Low vs. High can be a 20–30 FPS difference.

SettingRecommendedFPS ImpactNotes
Fog QualityLow or Medium★★★★★Biggest impact in Swamp/Mistlands biomes
Shadow QualityMedium★★★★Ultra shadows in large areas are very costly
SSAOOn★★★Off gives ~10% boost; minimal visual loss
Motion BlurOffPersonal preference; most players disable it
BloomOnNegligibleMinimal performance cost
DOF (Depth of Field)OffDisable for combat clarity
Chromatic AberrationOffNegligiblePersonal preference
V-SyncOff★★Off + NVIDIA/AMD frame limiter gives smoother pacing
Resolution Scale100%Drop to 75% for a significant FPS boost without going into settings

View Distance

Valheim's render distance for terrain and vegetation is controlled by a "Draw Distance" slider. Higher values increase the number of visible chunk polygons, which is primarily a CPU load:

FPS Issues Specific to Large Player Bases

If you have built an extensive base (100+ building pieces of stone, iron, etc.) and experience FPS drops:

Valheim Beginner's Guide

The Biome Progression — Stay in Order

Valheim has a gated biome structure. Rushing to the next biome before you have the right gear results in death within seconds. The intended order:

BiomeBossKey MaterialMinimum Gear Tier
MeadowsEikthyrLeather / FlintNone
Black ForestThe ElderBronze (tin+copper)Full leather armor + flint spear/bow
SwampBonemassIron (scrap iron from Muddy Scrap Piles)Full bronze armor + bronze weapons
MountainModerSilver (from Mountain veins)Full iron armor + iron weapons + frost mead
PlainsYagluthBlack Metal (from Fulings)Full wolf/padded armor + silver weapons
MistlandsThe QueenCarapace / Eitr materialsFull black metal armor + black metal weapons + Wisp light
AshlandsFaderFlametalFull Carapace/Eitr armor + Mistlands-tier weapons

Do not skip Eikthyr and The Elder. Their boss drops are required to unlock the next tier's crafting station upgrades.

Day One Checklist

  1. Punch trees to get Wood → craft a Stone Axe (stone from ground)
  2. Find rocks and farmhouses nearby for additional Stone and Flint
  3. Build: Workbench, then Hammer → build a small wooden base near your spawn
  4. Place a bed (requires 8 Wood) — this sets your spawn point
  5. Eat raspberries + mushrooms from the Meadows — food buffs are permanent during digestion
  6. Craft a Flint Spear or Flint Axe before venturing into the Black Forest
  7. Summon Eikthyr (two Deer Trophies at the Mystical Altar near spawn) before leaving Meadows
  8. Place a portal (requires 20 Fine Wood, 10 Grey Dwarf Eye, 2 Surtling Core) as soon as you can — portal travel is the primary fast-travel mechanic

The Food System (Critical)

Food is your stat system in Valheim. There are no character classes and no attribute points — your maximum health, stamina, and Eitr (magic resource) are entirely determined by what you've eaten recently.

Building Your First Base

Portals — Essential Fast Travel

Portals are one of Valheim's best mechanics. Two portals with the same tag connect to each other:

  1. Craft two portals (20 Fine Wood + 10 Grey Dwarf Eye + 2 Surtling Core each)
  2. Name the first "Base" at your main base
  3. Name the second "Mine" at your mining location
  4. Walk through one → appear at the other instantly

Key limitation: You cannot carry ores or ingots through portals (this is intentional design). Plan ore runs by boat or take the portal home, drop the ore, then portal back.

Multiplayer Guide

Valheim is designed with 1–10 player co-op in mind. Scaling notes:

Setting Up a Dedicated Server

  1. On Steam: Library → Tools → search "Valheim Dedicated Server" → Install
  2. Edit startheadlessserver.bat: set your world name, server name, password
  3. Open ports 2456–2458 TCP/UDP in your router
  4. Friends connect via Steam → Friends → Join Game or by your IP+port

Modding Valheim

Valheim has a strong modding community through Nexus Mods and Thunderstore (thunderstore.io, browser-based). The easiest way to install mods:

  1. Download r2modman (standalone mod manager for Valheim, free on Thunderstore)
  2. Select Valheim from the game list → Browse for mods
  3. Click Install → r2modman handles load order and BepInEx (the mod framework)

FAQ

Is Valheim free to play? No. It costs ~$19.99 on Steam and is frequently on sale. There is no free-to-play version or free trial. It is not available on Xbox Game Pass.

Is Valheim still in Early Access in 2026? Yes, Valheim remains in Steam Early Access. However, it is one of the most complete Early Access games available — the base game plus Mistlands and Ashlands biomes offer 100+ hours of content. The final biome (Deep North) is the main remaining content.

Can I play Valheim solo? Absolutely — the game is fully playable and enjoyable alone. Solo players typically take longer per biome due to resource gathering, but the experience is tuned to work without a party.

Is there cross-platform play? No. Valheim is Steam-only on PC. There is no console version and no crossplay.

Does Valheim have seasons or time-limited content? No. There are no seasonal events, battle passes, or FOMO mechanics. All content is permanent and available at your own pace.

How long is Valheim? Completing through the Ashlands biome (as of 2026): roughly 100–150 hours solo at a natural pace. Extensive building or co-op playthroughs extend this significantly.

Can I use controller on PC? Yes. Xbox controllers work natively. DualSense and DualShock 4 work through Steam Input. The game feels excellent on controller for both solo and casual co-op.

Is the dedicated server free? Yes. The Valheim Dedicated Server tool is free on Steam and requires no subscription. You need a machine to run it on (a cheap VPS works at ~$5–10/month).
