How to get Teams
- Windows 11: Teams is pre-installed. Find it in the Start menu. If missing, reinstall from microsoft.com/teams
- Windows 10: Download the installer from microsoft.com/teams — click Download Teams → choose Windows 10/11 → run the installer (no admin rights required; installs per-user)

First-time sign-in

Joining as a guest without a Microsoft account
If someone sends you a Teams meeting link and you don't have a Teams account:
- Click the meeting link
- Select Join on the web instead (or download the app)
- Enter your name and click Join now
- You join as a guest — the host must admit you from the lobby
Guest access works in Chrome, Edge, and Firefox. Safari has some limitations (no background effects).

Screen Sharing
In a Teams meeting, click Share (the arrow icon) to choose what to share:
- Screen: shares your entire desktop (everything visible on that monitor)
- Window: shares one specific app window — others see only that app
- PowerPoint Live: present a .pptx file; attendees can scroll slides independently while you present; no screen share lag for slides
- Whiteboard: open a collaborative digital whiteboard
Audio sharing: When sharing a window or screen, check Include system audio if you want participants to hear video/audio playback from your PC. Useful for sharing video clips, demos with sound, etc.
HDCP content (streaming services): Like Zoom and Google Meet, Teams blocks sharing windows that show DRM-protected content (Netflix, Disney+, etc.). You'll see a black rectangle instead of the video. This is enforced at the OS level, not by Teams.
Method 3: BlueStacks Android App
The Teams Android app offers:

Teams in Education

Choose Teams if: Your organization or school uses Microsoft 365. The tight integration with OneDrive, SharePoint, Outlook, and Office apps makes it the most complete collaboration platform when Microsoft is already the stack.
Troubleshooting
Teams uses too much memory / CPU Teams is an Electron app (Chromium-based). In 2023-2024 Microsoft released "New Teams" — a rebuilt client that uses 50% less memory. Go to Settings → General → switch to New Teams if you're still on the legacy client. The new Teams is significantly lighter.
Can't hear anyone / microphone not working Teams Settings → Devices → check that the correct Speaker and Microphone are selected. On Windows, open Sound control panel → Playback/Recording → make sure the device isn't set to Disabled. Also check Windows Privacy Settings → Microphone → allow desktop apps.
Camera shows black screen Close any app that might own the camera (Zoom, OBS, Skype). On Windows 11, Settings → Privacy & Security → Camera → ensure Microsoft Teams has access.
Notifications not working Windows Action Center may have silenced Teams. Windows Settings → System → Notifications → scroll to Teams → enable. In Teams itself, click your profile icon → Settings → Notifications → configure which events trigger alerts (mentions, replies, messages, calls).
Can't join a meeting as guest Your browser must allow pop-ups from teams.microsoft.com. Also check that JavaScript is enabled. If your organization has restricted guest access, you'll see "Your access has been restricted" — the meeting host needs to change the meeting settings or the IT admin needs to change the tenant policy.
Teams not loading (white/blank screen) Clear the Teams cache: close Teams completely → Windows: %appdata%\Microsoft\Teams → delete the contents of Cache, GPUCache, databases, Local Storage → reopen. On Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/Teams.
Missing features (breakout rooms, recording) These require a Microsoft 365 paid plan. The meeting organizer's account determines what's available — even if attendees have paid plans, the meeting uses the host's capabilities.
Echo on calls Echo means your microphone is picking up your speaker output. Use headphones. Teams' acoustic echo cancellation handles this in most cases, but laptop speakers + laptop mic at high volume will produce echo even with AEC.
Mac-Specific Notes
Teams for Mac is a native Apple Silicon app as of 2024 (no Rosetta translation needed on M-series Macs). Performance is excellent — Together Mode, background effects, and recordings all work without issues.
Camera and microphone permissions: macOS requires explicit permission for Teams. System Preferences → Privacy & Security → Camera / Microphone → ensure Microsoft Teams is checked.
