WhatsApp on PC is one of the most searched app questions in the world — "whatsapp on pc" / "whatsapp web" / "whatsapp desktop" / "whatsapp download pc" together pull an estimated 5M–10M+ searches per month. This guide covers every method: the native Windows/Mac desktop app, WhatsApp Web in a browser, the new standalone mode (no phone required), and BlueStacks for the full Android experience.

WhatsApp Desktop is a native Windows and Mac app that mirrors your WhatsApp account. It's faster than the browser version and stays open in your taskbar.

Download and install:

  1. Go to whatsapp.com/download
  2. Choose Windows or macOS → download the installer
  3. Run the installer — WhatsApp Desktop installs like any normal app
  4. Open WhatsApp on your phone → Settings → Linked Devices → Link a Device
  5. Point your phone's camera at the QR code shown on your PC screen
  6. Wait 10–20 seconds — your chats sync and you're connected

Method 2: WhatsApp Web (no install required)

WhatsApp Web runs entirely in your browser — no download needed. It's identical to the desktop app in features but requires a tab to stay open.

How to access:

  1. Open Chrome, Edge, or Firefox on your PC
  2. Go to web.whatsapp.com
  3. Open WhatsApp on your phone → Settings → Linked Devices → Link a Device
  4. Scan the QR code with your phone
  5. Your chats load within 10–30 seconds

Method 3: Standalone mode (no phone required — 2024+)

Since 2024, WhatsApp supports a companion mode that works even when your phone is switched off or has no signal. This is the default for the desktop app and WhatsApp Web when you link a device.

How it works:

To use without your phone:

  1. Link your PC once (phone present and online for the initial QR scan)
  2. After linking, you can put your phone away, turn it off, or leave it in another room
  3. Messages still arrive and send on PC independently

Important: If you don't use your phone for WhatsApp for more than 14 days (approximately), the linked device connection expires and you'll need to re-scan the QR code.

Method 4: BlueStacks (full Android app experience)

BlueStacks runs the full Android version of WhatsApp on your PC. This gives you the complete mobile interface — useful if you want features not available on the desktop app (like the full camera, Story camera effects, or WhatsApp Business app).

Install WhatsApp via BlueStacks:

  1. Download and install BlueStacks from bluestacks.com
  2. Sign in with a Google account inside BlueStacks
  3. Open the Play Store inside BlueStacks → search "WhatsApp" → Install
  4. Open WhatsApp inside BlueStacks → enter your phone number
  5. WhatsApp will send a verification SMS or call to that number
  6. Enter the code → set up your profile

BlueStacks vs native desktop app:

Use BlueStacks if you want a second WhatsApp account on PC or need the full WhatsApp Business app experience. For everyday messaging, the desktop app is faster and lighter.

WhatsApp Desktop vs WhatsApp Business on PC

WhatsApp Business has a separate app (WhatsApp Business) available on Android. The desktop experience for Business accounts is the same linked-device system — link WhatsApp Business on your phone to WhatsApp Desktop or Web on your PC.
