What Is The First Descendant?

The First Descendant is a free-to-play third-person looter shooter developed by NEXON, released July 2, 2024. Set in a sci-fi world where humanity fights alien invaders called the Vulgus, it combines the build-depth of Warframe with the third-person shooter feel of Outriders. You play as a "Descendant" — a powered soldier with unique abilities — as you complete missions, farm gear, and chase increasingly powerful builds.

The game reached 250,000 peak concurrent players on Steam in its first week and remains one of the most actively developed F2P shooters on PC.

Platform: PC (Steam and standalone via NEXON launcher), PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S. Price: Free to play. Crossplay supported. DRM: Steam / NEXON Launcher. File size: ~60–70 GB (grows with updates).

  2. Click Play Game (it is free — no purchase needed)
  3. Click Install → choose drive → click Next
  4. Download ~60–70 GB
  5. On first launch: the NEXON account link screen appears — create a free NEXON account or link an existing one

Via NEXON Launcher

  1. Download the NEXON Launcher from the official site
  2. Log in to your NEXON account (create one free)
  3. Find The First Descendant in the Library → Install

Core Game Systems Explained

Descendants (Characters)

Each Descendant is a unique hero with 4 abilities and a passive:

DescendantRolePlaystyle
AjaxTankShields, crowd control, team defense
BlairDamageFire DoT, AoE burns
BunnyMobility/DamageElectric dash builds, massive map coverage
FreynaPoison/DoTApply poison stacks, sustained damage
GleySelf-heal/BerserkerHigh risk/high reward, needs HP management
JayberSupportTurrets, healing nodes
KyleShield/TankMagnetic shields, knockback
LepicGrenadierGrenade builds, launcher synergies
LunaBuffMusic buffs for teammates
SharenStealth/BurstCloak + critical hit builds
ValbyCrowd controlWater area denial, slows
ViessaCryo/Crowd controlFreeze chains, AoE slow

Beginner picks: Bunny (easy mobility, great XP farming), Ajax (tanky, forgiving), Lepic (straightforward damage).

Free Descendants are unlocked through gameplay. Premium Descendants require either Research crafting (grind materials + Kuiper Shards) or direct Caliber purchase (paid currency).

Weapons and Modules (the Build System)

The core progression loop is building your Descendant's Modules — passive upgrades that modify skills, weapons, and stats.

The Four Activities

ActivityDescriptionReward
Story MissionsLinear narrative missions with cutscenesStory progress, base gear
Void InterceptBoss fight (1–4 players, matchmaking available)High-tier components, Descendant part blueprints
OutpostMini-dungeon, fast clearModule drops, XP
Void VesselHarder boss variant, requires Void Fragment entryBest weapon components

Beginner path: Complete the story → unlock all Void Intercept battles → farm the boss that drops the parts for your target Descendant.

The Research System (How to Unlock Descendants Without Paying)

Each non-starter Descendant has 4 parts: Code, Head, Body, Leg. Each part must be farmed from specific Void Intercept bosses, then crafted at the Research Station.

StepAction
1Find which boss drops which Descendant part (check in-game Descendant menu → Research → Parts Locations)
2Run that Void Intercept fight repeatedly until you collect all 4 parts (each part is a random drop, ~10–30% chance)
3Go to Research Station → Research → submit all 4 parts + Kuiper Shards + Gold
4Wait the research timer (24–72h real time, or skip with Caliber — paid)
5Collect the fully crafted Descendant

Time commitment: 10–30 runs per part, 4 parts = 40–120 runs per Descendant. This is a significant grind. The paid shortcut (direct purchase for 3,000–4,000 Caliber ≈ $30–40) exists but is not required.

Currency and Monetization Overview

CurrencySourceUsed For
GoldMission rewards, selling itemsResearch crafting, Module tuning
Kuiper ShardsEnemy drops, missionsResearch crafting costs
CaliberReal money only ($1 ≈ 10 Caliber roughly)Instant Descendant purchase, cosmetics, Research skip
Crystallization CatalystRare drop, purchasableModule socket enhancement (additive slot expansion)
Forma (equivalent)Crystallization Catalyst in this gameResets a module slot to enhance it

Is it pay-to-win? The game is pay-to-skip, not pay-to-win. All Descendants and most weapons are obtainable through gameplay. Caliber primarily buys cosmetics and time. The exception: some exclusive cosmetic Descendants are only available for purchase and have no gameplay impact.

  1. Do not spend Caliber on Research skips early — the base Descendants are sufficient for learning the game
  2. Save Caliber for inventory expansion slots (practical) or your most-wanted cosmetic
  3. Use the Battle Pass (seasonal, ~$10) only if you play consistently — it offers good cosmetic value

Crossplay and Cross-Save

The First Descendant supports full crossplay between PC, PS5, and Xbox:

Performance Issues and Fixes

Stuttering on Loading Into New Zones

Cause: UE5 shader streaming; more pronounced without NVMe SSD. Fix: Install on NVMe, reduce Texture Quality if VRAM-limited, keep Lumen at Medium or Off.

Low FPS Despite Good GPU

Cause: Lumen GI is GPU-bound; many players see 40–50 FPS on RTX 3070 with default settings. Fix: Disable Lumen GI entirely for 25–40% FPS gain. Use DLSS Quality or Balanced.

BattlEye Launch Error / Crash on Launch

Fix: Run Steam as Administrator. Verify game files (Steam → Library → TFD → Properties → Local Files → Verify). Disable VPN if running one.

"Failed to Connect to Server" on Login

Cause: NEXON servers occasionally under maintenance or region issues. Fix: Check NEXON's official Twitter/@TheFirstDescendant for server status. Wait 5–15 minutes and retry.

Controller Not Detected

TFD has full Xbox controller support. For DualSense: plug via USB, or use DS4Windows for Bluetooth. Fix: If not detected, go to Steam → Settings → Controller → Enable PlayStation Configuration Support.

Crash in Void Intercept Co-op

Cause: Memory pressure in heavy particle effect fights. Fix: Close background apps, reduce Particle Quality to Medium, ensure 16 GB RAM minimum.

FPS Drops in Town (Albion)

Cause: NPC density and lighting calculations in the main hub. Fix: Lower Crowd Density and Ambient Occlusion. Hub FPS is always lower than mission FPS — it's expected.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is The First Descendant really free? Yes — download and play without spending money. All Descendants and weapons obtainable through gameplay. Caliber (paid) buys cosmetics and research skips.

Does it require a good PC? GTX 1080 is the minimum. The game looks best on RTX 3080+ with DLSS. Mid-range PCs (RTX 3060, RX 6700 XT) run it well at 1080p/60fps with DLSS Balanced and Lumen Off.

Can I play solo? Mostly yes. Story missions and Outposts are fully solo. Void Intercept bosses are available solo but significantly harder — matchmaking (3–4 players) is recommended.

What's the endgame? Farming Void Intercept for better weapon components, optimizing your Descendant's Module build, and completing seasonal content. The build-chasing loop is the endgame.

Is there a story worth following? Moderate. The narrative is functional but the real draw is the gameplay loop. Cutscene quality is high for a F2P game.

How big are updates? NEXON releases major content updates every 2–3 months (new Descendants, weapons, story chapters) with smaller patches weekly.

Does it work on Steam Deck? BattlEye restricts Steam Deck play. As of 2026, not officially supported. A workaround exists using the Windows compatibility layer but it is not officially endorsed and may break with patches.

How many hours before I'm "endgame ready"? Expect 30–50 hours to finish the story, level a Descendant to 40, and complete a basic Module build. True endgame optimization continues indefinitely.
