PUBG: Battlegrounds on PC — What You Need to Know First

PUBG: Battlegrounds (commonly called "PUBG PC") is the original battle royale that launched in 2017. It's a different game from PUBG Mobile — same universe and similar mechanics, but separate servers, separate accounts, different graphics, and a very different feel.

Important notes:

Step 1: Download PUBG via Steam

PUBG is Steam exclusive — it is not on Epic Games Store, Game Pass, or other platforms.

  1. Install Steam if you haven't: steampowered.com → Download Steam
  2. Create a free Steam account
  3. In Steam: click Store → Search "PUBG" → Find PUBG: Battlegrounds
  4. Click Play Game (it's free) → Install → Choose location → Confirm
  5. Game size: approximately 40 GB (varies with updates)
  6. Download time at common speeds: 50 Mbps = ~1.8h / 100 Mbps = ~55 min / 200+ Mbps = ~25 min

While downloading: Create a Steam account with two-factor authentication. PUBG accounts are tied to Steam.

Step 2: First Launch and Account Setup

  1. Launch PUBG from Steam Library → click Play
  2. The game opens a launcher that checks for updates and anti-cheat
  3. Battleye anti-cheat installs automatically on first launch — allow it through UAC
  4. Log in with your Steam account credentials (no separate PUBG account needed)
  5. Complete the brief tutorial sequence — skip if you're experienced

New player protections: PUBG has a "Survivor Pass" and beginner matchmaking. New accounts match with other beginners for the first 10–20 games, which is a significant improvement from early PUBG days.

Understanding PUBG PC Maps

PUBG has 9 playable maps as of 2026, each with different gameplay feel:

MapSizeCharacterBest for
Erangel8×8 kmClassic wide-open battlefieldsAll playstyles; the original
Miramar8×8 kmDesert urban combatMid-range gunfights
Taego8×8 kmKorean countrysideClose quarters + comeback mechanic
Rondo8×8 kmRiverside/urban varietyNew (2024); varied terrain
Sanhok4×4 kmDense jungleFast-paced, aggressive play
Vikendi6×6 kmSnowy EuropeanVehicle combat, medium pace
Deston8×8 kmNear-future urbanVertical gameplay, ziplines
Karakin2×2 kmNorth AfricaUltra-fast, 64-player chaos
Haven1×1 kmSmall city32-player infantry-focused

Beginners: Start with Erangel — it's the most balanced and most taught-by-community map. Avoid Karakin and Haven until you understand gunplay.

Core Gameplay Loop

The basics:

  1. 100 players deploy from a plane via parachute onto a map
  2. Loot buildings for weapons, armor, healing items, and attachments
  3. Blue Zone (safe zone) shrinks over time — you must stay inside or take damage
  4. Red zones appear randomly — vehicles and bad luck can kill you if caught inside
  5. Last person or team standing wins — "Winner Winner Chicken Dinner"

Modes:

Knockdown vs elimination:

In duo and squad: being shot reduces HP to 0 → you enter DBNO (down but not out) state — teammates can revive you within ~12 seconds before you bleed out. Full kill requires the second action of "finishing" a downed player.

Weapons and Loot Guide for Beginners

Weapon categories:

CategoryExamplesBest use
Assault RiflesM416, AKM, SCAR-L, GrozaVersatile, most forgiving
Designated Marksman RiflesMini 14, SKS, SLR, Mk12Mid-long range semi-auto
Sniper RiflesAWM, Kar98k, M24Long-range one-shots
SMGsUMP45, Vector, Tommy GunClose quarters, fast TTK
ShotgunsS12K, DBSClose quarters panic
LMGsDP-28, M249Suppression, vehicle destruction
PistolsP18C, RevolverSidearm only

Beginner recommendation: Pick up any AR (M416 is the most common and forgiving), a scope (2x or 4x), a suppressor if you find one, and any helmet/vest. Don't overthink attachments early.

Attachment priority:

  1. Scope — Any magnification over iron sights improves accuracy
  2. Suppressor — Hides muzzle flash and reduces sound significantly
  3. Extended Quick Draw Mag — Faster reload + bigger magazine
  4. Vertical Grip — Reduces vertical recoil most reliably

Healing items:

ItemUseNotes
BandageHeals 10 HP, use 7× to fullVery slow, interruptible
First Aid KitHeals to 75 HPStandard mid-combat heal
Med KitHeals to 100 HPSlow cast, use in safety

PC Settings for Best Performance

Graphics settings (for 1080p, 60+ FPS on mid-range GPU):

SettingRecommendedReason
Overall QualityCustomDon't use presets
Render Scale100%Lower only if below 60 FPS consistently
Anti-AliasingUltraLow makes game look grainy
Post-ProcessingLowNo gameplay impact
ShadowsVery LowBiggest FPS gain — no gameplay cost
TexturesHigh (or Ultra if VRAM allows)High texture = better target visibility
EffectsLowExplosions/smoke FPS drops
FoliageUltraCritical — low foliage reveals players hiding in grass
View DistanceUltraCritical — see enemies at range
SharpenMediumImproves target visibility
VsyncOffAlways off in competitive play
Motion BlurOffDisable for clarity
FPS LimitMatch your monitor (144/165/240)Cap to avoid GPU coil whine

Foliage and View Distance must be Ultra: Low foliage makes you render as standing targets in grass while opponents are invisible. This is not optional for competitive play.

PUBG Free vs Survivor Pass Tier

PUBG is free but has cosmetic monetization:

Free account:

PUBG Plus (paid membership):

Survivor Pass (battle pass):

G-Coins (in-game currency):

Cosmetics are purely visual — no pay-to-win items exist. Weapons, armor, and vehicles are only found in-game.

Common Issues and Fixes

Game crashes on launch

  1. Verify game files: Steam → Right-click PUBG → Properties → Local Files → Verify integrity
  2. Update GPU drivers (GeForce Experience / AMD Adrenalin)
  3. Reinstall Visual C++ Redistributables (2015–2022 x64 and x86)
  4. Disable overlays: Steam overlay, Discord overlay, Nvidia Overlay, Xbox Game Bar

Stuttering during gameplay

  1. SSD required — if on HDD, this is likely the cause
  2. Set PUBG to High process priority in Task Manager
  3. Disable Windows Game Mode (paradoxically sometimes causes issues)
  4. Lower Effects and Post-Processing to Low

Anti-cheat error / Battleye not initializing

  1. Run Steam as Administrator
  2. Allow Battleye through Windows Firewall: Control Panel → Windows Defender Firewall → Allow an app → add BEService.exe
  3. Reinstall Battleye: Navigate to PUBG game folder → TslGame → Binaries → Win64 → Battleye → Run install_battleye.bat

High ping / Laggy servers

Black screen on launch

  1. Set PUBG to Fullscreen mode (not Borderless)
  2. Right-click PUBG in Steam → Properties → General → Launch Options: add -borderlesswindow (sometimes forces proper rendering)
  3. Disable Hardware-Accelerated GPU Scheduling in Windows if enabled

Stuck on loading screen or infinite loading

  1. Delete AppData: %appdata% → search TslGame → delete ShaderCache folder
  2. Disable antivirus temporarily during launch (then re-enable)
  3. Firewall: Ensure TslGame.exe, PUBG Launcher.exe, and BEService.exe all have outbound access

Frequently Asked Questions

Is PUBG PC really free? Yes — as of January 2022, PUBG: Battlegrounds is free on Steam. No purchase required. The optional Survivor Pass and cosmetics are the only paid elements.

Is PUBG PC pay-to-win? No. All cosmetics are visual only. Weapons, vehicles, and armor are identical for every player regardless of what they've purchased.

Can I transfer my PUBG Mobile account to PUBG PC? No. They are entirely separate games with separate servers and separate progression. Your PUBG Mobile cosmetics and stats do not carry over.

Do I need a powerful PC to play PUBG? PUBG is demanding compared to most other battle royales. You need at least a GTX 1060 / RX 580 and an SSD to play comfortably at 1080p/60fps. Below that, you'll have stutters and inconsistent performance.

Is PUBG safe to play — no cheaters? PUBG has struggled with cheaters historically. Battleye anti-cheat has improved significantly. The ranked mode has stricter anti-cheat enforcement. Some cheating exists, especially in unranked and in Asian server regions.

Can I play PUBG with a controller on PC? Yes. Xbox controllers are supported natively. PlayStation controllers work via Steam Input. However, PUBG's core design is mouse/keyboard — controller players are at a disadvantage in PC lobbies. Controller players are better served by PUBG on Xbox or PlayStation where lobbies are controller-only.

What's the best PUBG PC drop location for beginners? On Erangel: Georgopol (large city, heavy loot, but busy), Mylta Power (good loot, less traffic), or any mid-sized town away from the plane's flight path. Avoid Pochinki and School for your first 20 games — they are extreme hotdrops.
