Palworld is an open-world survival-crafting game by Japanese developer Pocketpair, released in Early Access on January 19, 2024. Players explore a vast archipelago, capturing creature companions called Pals, building factories and bases, and fighting hostile factions and poachers. It became the second-fastest-selling game on Steam in history after its launch — reaching 2.1 million concurrent players within 30 hours. The game blends Pokémon-style creature collection with base-building, automation, and gunplay into a uniquely compelling loop. It remains in active Early Access development with significant content updates.

Important: 16 GB RAM is the hard practical minimum. 32 GB is strongly recommended for large bases with many Pals active, as Pals performing work tasks have significant CPU and RAM overhead. An SSD is mandatory — HDD users will experience severe world streaming stutters.

How to Download Palworld

  1. Open Steam on your PC and log in.
  2. Search Palworld or visit the store page directly.
  3. Click Add to Cart → complete the purchase (paid game, ~$29.99/£24.99).
  4. Click Install and choose your installation folder.
  5. Wait for the install to complete — Palworld uses EasyAntiCheat (EAC), which installs automatically.
  6. Launch from the Steam Library.

Xbox Game Pass (PC): Palworld is also available on Xbox Game Pass for PC via the Xbox app. Download the Xbox app from Microsoft, subscribe to PC Game Pass, and search for Palworld. Crossplay between Steam and Xbox versions is not supported as of 2026 — Steam and Xbox players are on separate servers.

Multiplayer note: Dedicated servers are available. Official servers hosted by Pocketpair are free to join. You can also self-host a dedicated server using the Palworld Dedicated Server tool available for free on Steam.

Best Graphics Settings

Palworld is built on Unreal Engine 5 and uses Lumen global illumination by default — a beautiful but GPU-expensive rendering path. Tuning these settings correctly can double your frame rate on mid-range hardware.

SettingPerformance ImpactRecommendation
Screen ResolutionVery HighNative display resolution
Screen ModeHighFullscreen (best performance)
Shadow Quality★★★★★Medium — biggest single FPS lever
Global Illumination★★★★★Off on GPUs under RTX 3070; Medium or Low otherwise
Anti-Aliasing★★★★☆TSR Medium (UE5 native) or FSR 2 Quality
Ambient Occlusion★★★☆☆Off or Low on weak GPUs
Depth of Field★★★☆☆Off (also reduces motion blur feel in combat)
Motion Blur★★★☆☆Off — always. No gameplay benefit.
Bloom★★☆☆☆Personal preference; Off for clarity
Foliage Draw Distance★★★☆☆Medium for performance, High for vistas
View Distance★★★☆☆Medium for mid-range GPUs

Upscaling Options

Palworld uses UE5's TSR (Temporal Super Resolution) and FSR 2.1:

Performance Troubleshooting

Stuttering in Loaded Areas / Near Large Bases

UE5's shader compilation and Lumen GI cause stuttering in content-rich areas. Solutions:

  1. Lower GI to Off or Low — Lumen recalculates dynamically and is the primary stutter source at large bases.
  2. Reduce active Pals at base — more than 10–12 simultaneously animated Pals at base degrades CPU performance significantly. Keep active base Pal count at or below 10 if stuttering.
  3. Enable Memory Optimization mode in Palworld settings (introduced in 2024 updates).
  4. Lower Foliage Distance — the open world uses aggressive foliage density; reducing draw distance helps near forests.

FPS Drops When Pals Are Fighting / Many Pals On Screen

Palworld's Pal AI runs on the CPU. Combat with 20+ Pals simultaneously can overwhelm mid-range CPUs:

Crash on Launch / EasyAntiCheat Error

  1. Right-click Palworld in Steam → Properties → Local Files → Verify Integrity of Game Files
  2. Ensure EasyAntiCheat is installed — run EasyAntiCheat_Setup.exe in the game folder
  3. Run Steam as Administrator
  4. Disable overclocking software (MSI Afterburner, EVGA Precision)
  5. Update GPU drivers to the latest release

RAM Running Out (Crash After Extended Play)

Palworld has known memory leaks in Extended sessions. Workaround: restart the game every 2–3 hours. This is an active Early Access bug that Pocketpair is addressing.

Gameplay Basics: Your First Hours

Core Loop

  1. Explore the starting island, collecting resources (Wood, Stone, Fiber, Ore)
  2. Catch Pals using Pal Spheres — throw a sphere at a weakened Pal
  3. Build a base — your Palbox is the center of all base operations
  4. Assign Pals to work — every Pal has Work Suitability traits (mining, farming, crafting, logging, etc.)
  5. Research technology — spend Technology Points to unlock new crafting recipes
  6. Progress to stronger islands — the archipelago scales in difficulty from the starting Windswept Hills to late-game volcanic and frozen zones

LoggingChops trees automaticallyLifmunk, Eikthyrdeer

TransportingMoves resources to storageCattiva, Broncherry

A diverse base needs Pals covering Kindling, Handiwork, Mining, Transporting, and Watering as a minimum. The most important early catch is Cattiva — it covers Handiwork + Transporting and is abundant at the starting area.

Base Automation

Your base runs autonomously while you explore — Pals work on their own. Key principles:

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Palworld finished? No — it is in Early Access as of 2026. The game is playable end-to-end but is actively receiving content updates, including new Pals, islands, and systems. Pocketpair has committed to full release but has not set a final date.

Can I play Palworld solo? Yes, fully. The game is balanced for solo play. You can run your own private world without ever joining a server.

Is Palworld on Game Pass? Yes, Xbox Game Pass for PC includes Palworld. Note: Game Pass version and Steam version are separate; you cannot join cross-platform sessions between them.

How much storage does Palworld need? About 40 GB. An SSD is strongly recommended — HDD install causes significant world-streaming stutters.

Is Palworld playable on a laptop? Yes, with caveats. An RTX 3060 laptop GPU can run at 1080p/60fps on Medium settings. Ensure your laptop is plugged in and set to High Performance mode. Monitor temperatures — sustained GPU load above 90°C will throttle performance.

Is there a Steam Deck version? Palworld has a Playable rating on Steam Deck (not Verified). Performance is 30–45 FPS on medium-low settings. FSR 2 Balanced helps significantly. It is playable but not the ideal platform.

Will my Early Access saves carry to the full release? Pocketpair has stated that save transfers to full release are planned, though some save formats may be updated. Follow official patch notes when the full release is announced.

How many Pals are in the game? As of 2026, Palworld has 130+ Pals with more added in each major update. Check the official Palworld website for the current count.
