OBLIVION REMASTERED PC — "oblivion remastered pc" / "oblivion remastered system requirements" / "oblivion remastered settings" / "oblivion remastered fps fix" / "oblivion remastered pc guide" = 4M–9M+/mo combined (remaster of one of gaming's most iconic RPGs; shadow-dropped April 2025 to immediate viral success; developed by Virtuos, published by Bethesda Softworks; Unreal Engine 5 visual overhaul with original 2006 story/quests intact; Day 1 Xbox/PC Game Pass; 10M+ players in first weeks)
What Is Oblivion Remastered?
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered is a complete visual and technical overhaul of Bethesda's 2006 open-world RPG, shadow-dropped during the April 2025 Xbox Showcase. Developer Virtuos rebuilt the game's presentation in Unreal Engine 5 — adding Nanite geometry, Lumen global illumination, DLSS 3/FSR 3/XeSS upscaling, and modern character lighting — while preserving the original Gamebryo-engine quest design, world layout, voice acting, and story. All original DLC is included: Shivering Isles (the fan-favourite expansion), Knights of the Nine, and all content packs.
The remaster also rebalances the most criticised system in the original: the infamous level-scaling mechanic, where enemies grew stronger every time you levelled up, punishing players who levelled inefficient skills. The remastered version smooths this considerably while keeping the class-and-skill DNA intact.
Available on PC via Steam, Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and included in Xbox/PC Game Pass on Day 1 at no extra cost.
System Requirements
| Tier | CPU | GPU | RAM | Storage |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Minimum (1080p/30fps Low) | Intel Core i7-8700K / AMD Ryzen 5 3600X | GTX 1070 8GB / RX 5600 XT | 16 GB | 70 GB SSD |
| Recommended (1080p/60fps Medium-High) | Intel Core i5-12600K / AMD Ryzen 5 5600X | RTX 2080 8GB / RX 6700 XT 12GB | 16 GB | 70 GB NVMe |
| High (1440p/60fps Ultra) | Intel Core i7-12700K / AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D | RTX 3080 10GB / RX 6800 XT | 32 GB | 70 GB NVMe |
| 4K/Ultra + Frame Gen | Intel Core i9-13900K / AMD Ryzen 9 7900X | RTX 4080 16GB / RX 7900 XT | 32 GB | 70 GB NVMe |
- SSD is mandatory. Oblivion Remastered's UE5 streaming architecture will stutter severely on a spinning HDD. An NVMe improves open-world load smoothness over a SATA SSD.
- 16 GB RAM is the practical minimum. 8 GB causes noticeable hitching in dense city zones (Imperial City, Leyawiin).
- Integrated graphics are not supported.
How to Download and Install
Via Steam
- Open Steam → search "Oblivion Remastered" → Add to Cart ($49.99) or Play if you have Game Pass (requires Xbox app — see below).
- Click Install → choose drive (preferably NVMe).
- First launch takes 5–10 minutes on initial shader compilation (UE5 pipeline build — normal, do not interrupt).
Via Xbox/PC Game Pass
- Open the Xbox app (download from microsoft.com if not installed).
- Sign in with your Microsoft account → search "Oblivion Remastered" → Install.
- Game installs to the directory you configure in Xbox app settings.

WindowsAppsfolder. Mods require extra steps (see Mods section).
Controller Setup
- Xbox controller: plug in via USB or pair via Bluetooth → detected automatically.
- DualSense (PS5): USB works natively in-game. For haptics/adaptive triggers, use DS4Windows or the Steam Input layer.
- Full keyboard/mouse remapping available in Settings → Controls.
Best PC Settings for Performance
Oblivion Remastered runs on Unreal Engine 5 with Lumen and Nanite active by default. Lumen (real-time global illumination) is the single biggest performance cost. Tuning these settings first will unlock the largest FPS gains.
Critical Settings (Biggest FPS Impact)
| Setting | Recommended | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Global Illumination Quality | Medium | Lumen GI at High/Ultra doubles GPU cost. Medium looks near-identical indoors. |
| Shadow Quality | High (not Ultra) | Ultra shadows are 25–35% more expensive than High with minimal visible gain. |
| Upscaling (DLSS/FSR/XeSS) | Quality mode | Biggest FPS gain with least visual loss. DLSS for RTX; FSR 3 for AMD; XeSS for Intel Arc. |
| Motion Blur | Off | Always off — creates input lag feeling and blurs combat feedback. |
| Depth of Field | Off | Purely cosmetic, reduces clarity during dialogue and exploration. |
| Ambient Occlusion | Medium | HBAO+ at High is expensive; Medium retains corner-shadow realism. |
| Foliage Density | High | Going Ultra on foliage is a major CPU cost in forested zones. |
| Frame Generation | On (RTX 4000 / RX 7000 series only) | +40–60% effective framerate at near-zero latency penalty when base FPS ≥ 50. |
Per-GPU Tier Presets
| GPU | Recommended Preset | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| GTX 1070 / RX 5600 XT | Low–Medium, FSR Quality | GI=Low, Shadows=Medium, FSR=Quality. Target 30–40 fps at 1080p. |
| RTX 2080 / RX 6700 XT | Medium–High, DLSS/FSR Quality | GI=Medium, Shadows=High. 60fps at 1080p achievable. |
| RTX 3080 / RX 6800 XT | High, DLSS/FSR Quality | GI=High, Shadows=High, 60–90fps at 1440p. |
| RTX 4080 / RX 7900 XT | Ultra + Frame Gen | All Ultra, Frame Gen on. 90–120fps at 4K. |
UE5 Shader Stutter Fix
Oblivion Remastered compiles shaders in the background during gameplay on first run. You will notice frame hitches for 15–30 minutes on the first session.
Fixes:
- Launch the game, reach the main menu, and wait 5–10 minutes before starting a new game (allows background compilation).
- Play on a low-graphical-demand area first (character creation cave) to front-load shader generation.
- On NVIDIA: open GeForce Experience → Settings → disable "In-Game Overlay" (overlay can conflict with shader cache).
- On AMD: open Adrenalin → disable Radeon Overlay during the first session.
This is a one-time process. Subsequent sessions will not exhibit the same hitching.
Beginner's Guide to Oblivion Remastered
Character Creation
At game start, you design your character and optionally choose a class (or create a custom one). Class determines your Major Skills — the 7 skills that level fastest. Levelling Major Skills raises your character level and triggers enemy scaling.
Beginner class tip: Use a preset class like Knight (heavy armour, blade, block) or Sorcerer (mysticism, destruction, conjuration) for your first run. Custom classes are more powerful but require understanding how levelling works to avoid the classic Oblivion trap (levelling in minor skills wastes level-ups).
Remastered levelling change: The remaster softens the original's infamous "efficient levelling" requirement. You no longer need to track exactly how many Major Skill increases you've accumulated per level. Enemies still scale, but at a forgiving rate — early exploration won't lock you into an impossible difficulty spike.
Race Choice
| Race | Strength | Good For |
|---|---|---|
| Imperial | Speechcraft, Voice of the Emperor | Dialogue-heavy playthrough, merchants |
| Nord | Frost resistance, blade/blunt | Combat, frontline fighters |
| Redguard | Blade, athletics, adrenaline rush | Aggressive melee builds |
| High Elf | High Magicka, spell efficiency | Mage builds |
| Breton | Magic resistance, conjuration | Support mage, anti-magic tank |
| Dark Elf | Destruction, athletics, sneak | Battlemage, hybrid |
| Wood Elf | Marksman, sneak | Archer/stealth |
| Khajiit | Sneak, hand-to-hand, acrobatics | Thief/assassin |
| Argonian | Disease immunity, swimming | Thief, underwater exploration |
| Orc | Heavy armour, armorer, block | Tank |
First Hour Priorities
- Escape the Tutorial (Imperial Prison): Follow Emperor Uriel Septim through the dungeon. Do not rush — grab every item and learn the lockpicking and combat systems here.
- Head to Weynon Priory: Deliver the Amulet of Kings to Jauffre. This opens the main quest but you're free to ignore it and explore.
- Join a Guild early: The Fighters Guild (melee) and Mages Guild (magic) are easiest to join and provide reliable income from quests. The Thieves Guild and Dark Brotherhood have the best writing in the game but darker themes.
- Level Alchemy: Collect ingredients → use them in the Alchemy skill. Potions are extremely powerful and Alchemy levels quickly. Even a modest Restore Health potion saves you in early combat.
- Repair your gear: Carry Repair Hammers and use them between fights. Broken armour loses its rating; broken weapons do reduced damage.
The Oblivion Gates
Oblivion Gates — portals to the daedric realm of Oblivion — begin appearing across Cyrodiil after the main quest triggers them. Inside each gate is a Sigil Stone at the top of a tower; retrieve it to close the gate. Closing gates is optional but gives powerful Sigil Stones used in enchanting.
Strategy: Do not close every gate you find early in the game. Gates scale to your character level. A level-1 character closing gates will face increasingly difficult daedra. The main quest requires closing one gate at Kvatch early on — beyond that, proceed at your own pace.
Faction Questlines (Recommended Order)
| Faction | Best For | Highlight |
|---|---|---|
| Fighters Guild | Beginners, melee | Classic guild storyline, good early income |
| Mages Guild | Magic users | Arcane University access, unique spells |
| Thieves Guild | Stealth builds | Best heist missions in the game |
| Dark Brotherhood | Any build | Widely considered the best questline in the game |
| Arena | Any | Easy money and levelling in Imperial City |
Combat Tips (Remastered)
- Block: Holding block right before an enemy strike triggers a Power Block that staggers the enemy. Master this and melee combat becomes manageable.
- Sneak Attacks: Hitting an unaware enemy with a melee weapon or arrow deals 4–6× bonus damage. A Sneak+Blade character can one-shot most enemies from stealth.
- Spell Efficiency: Casting spells costs Magicka. If you run dry in a fight, switch to melee or retreat to restore (Restore Magicka potions or Restore Attribute spells).
- Restoration is underrated: Even non-mage characters should carry a Restore Health spell for emergency heals. Potions run out; the spell refreshes with sleep/Magicka.
Troubleshooting Common PC Errors
| Error | Fix |
|---|---|
| Shader stutter on first run | Wait at main menu 5–10 min before entering game world; play through character creation cave before open world |
| Low FPS in Imperial City / cities | Reduce Global Illumination to Medium, disable Ultra shadows; cities stress Lumen heavily |
| DX12 crash / black screen on launch | Add -dx11 to Steam launch options (Properties → General → Launch Options) |
| VRAM OOM / texture streaming artifacts | Lower Texture Quality one step; close background apps; ensure 8GB+ VRAM for High settings |
| Game Pass install won't launch | Open Xbox app → library → click game → verify install; ensure Xbox app is up to date |
| Controller not recognised | Use Steam Input layer; ensure no conflicting DS4Windows/Joy2Key instances running |
| HDR washed out / too bright | Calibrate via Windows HDR Calibration app (Settings → Display → HDR → Calibrate); or disable HDR and use SDR |
| Infinite load screen | Delete shader cache: %localappdata%\OBlivionRemastered\Saved\Cache\ShaderArchives\ and restart |
