What Is Metaphor: ReFantazio?

Released on October 11, 2024, Metaphor: ReFantazio is a JRPG developed by Studio Zero — a subsidiary team within Atlus — and published by Sega. It is directed by Katsura Hashino, the creator of Persona 3, Persona 4, and Persona 5, making it one of the most anticipated RPGs of the decade from one of the genre's defining studios.

Set in a high-fantasy kingdom called the United Kingdom of Euchronia, the story follows a young man known as Will who journeys to fulfill a prophecy and participate in a royal election to save the kingdom and his prince. The world blends Western fantasy aesthetics — knights, magic, monsters — with the dense social simulation and calendar-driven structure Persona players will immediately recognize.

What distinguishes Metaphor from Persona is the battle system: a hybrid of real-time combat (to trigger ambush bonuses and eliminate weak enemies in the overworld) and a deep turn-based system for actual encounters. Characters equip Archetypes — the game's version of a job system — which can be inherited, mastered, and combined across 40+ available jobs. The game won numerous GOTY awards for 2024 and is widely considered the definitive Atlus title since Persona 5 Royal.

What the Minimum Really Means

The GTX 1060 minimum handles 1080p/Medium at 60 fps comfortably. Metaphor: ReFantazio is not a graphically demanding game by modern standards — it prioritizes art direction (hand-drawn anime aesthetics, Shigenori Soejima character designs) over raw polygon count, similar to Persona 5 Royal. The CPU requirement is also modest. An i7-4770 paired with a GTX 1060 will deliver a smooth 60 fps experience at 1080p if you keep Shadow Quality and Anti-Aliasing at medium.

At the recommended tier (GTX 1080 / RX 6700), 1440p/High at 60+ fps is easily achieved without upscaling. A 1080p/60 experience on integrated graphics is not officially supported but has been reported as playable at Low settings on recent Intel Arc iGPUs.

PC Installation

Steam

  1. Open Steam → Library → search "Metaphor: ReFantazio"
  2. Click Install → select your drive
  3. No Denuvo DRM — the game runs without an internet connection after initial activation
  4. Steam Cloud saves are supported

Xbox App (Game Pass)

  1. Search "Metaphor: ReFantazio" in the Xbox app
  2. The game is available on Xbox Game Pass Ultimate (PC) — included at launch
  3. Install and launch normally — identical gameplay to the Steam version

No DRM note: Unlike some Atlus PC releases, Metaphor: ReFantazio does not include Denuvo anti-tamper software. This means no authentication server requirements, better performance on low-end hardware, and straightforward modding community access. The absence of Denuvo is a significant improvement over earlier Atlus PC ports.

Graphics Settings — What Actually Matters

Metaphor uses a proprietary Atlus engine evolved from the engine used in Persona 5 Strikers and Catherine: Full Body. It is efficient and scales well from low-end to high-end hardware. Unlike most 2024 releases, it does not use Unreal Engine 5 — there is no Lumen, no Nanite, no shader stutter problem.

Archetypes — The Job System

Archetypes are the core progression system in Metaphor: ReFantazio. Each Archetype is a job that grants unique skills, passives, and stat bonuses. Characters equip Archetypes individually, and skills learned in one Archetype can be "inherited" — equipped as sub-skills while using a different Archetype.

Archetype Tiers

TierDescriptionExample
RoyalBase Archetypes, unlocked earlyMage, Warrior, Healer
AdvancedEvolved from Royal, require rank milestonesSummoner (from Mage), Knight (from Warrior)
EliteTop-tier specializations, require two Archetypes maxedGrand Summoner, Dark Knight
UniqueCharacter-specific Archetypes, one per party memberWill's Protagonist Archetype

How mastery works: Equipping an Archetype grants EXP to it as you battle. Reaching rank milestones unlocks skills that can be permanently inherited. Maxing a Royal Archetype unlocks its Advanced version. There are 40+ Archetypes total, and experimenting freely is encouraged — respeccing carries no penalty.

Starting Archetypes to Prioritize

Combat System

Overworld Combat: The Ambush Bonus

In the overworld and dungeon corridors, enemies exist as visible entities you can attack in real-time. Striking an enemy from behind in the overworld grants a pre-emptive turn — your party acts before the enemy. Striking an enemy in the front or getting hit yourself gives them the first turn.

For weaker enemies (visibly smaller or lower-level), landing a strong enough overworld hit can one-shot the encounter entirely — the combat screen is skipped and you receive EXP and items. This dramatically speeds up early dungeon floors.

Turn-Based Encounters: Weaknesses and Press Turns

The core turn-based system uses a Press Turn mechanic similar to the Shin Megami Tensei series:

  1. Each character starts the round with one action token
  2. Hitting an enemy weakness or landing a critical hit costs half a token and may give a bonus action
  3. Missing or being nulled/reflected consumes extra tokens
  4. Down: Knocking all enemies down with weaknesses ends their turn and gives your party a bonus round

Implication: Knowing enemy weaknesses and equipping Archetypes that cover them is the difference between efficient and slow combat. Use the Analyze skill (available early) to reveal enemy resistances.

Synthesis Skills

When two specific party members are adjacent in the turn order and one uses a matching skill, they can trigger a Synthesis — a combined attack dealing bonus damage. Synthesis combinations are tied to party positioning and Archetype choices. Building a party around two strong Synthesis chains is a viable (and powerful) mid-game strategy.

Calendar System and Time Management

Like Persona, Metaphor: ReFantazio runs on a calendar — you have a set number of days to complete the main story objective, and you choose how to spend each day. Days are divided into a daytime and evening action slot.

Time-Consuming Activities

Time Management Priority

  1. Main dungeon → progress the story route before the deadline
  2. Follower events for Archetypes you want → prioritize party members first
  3. Gauntlet Runner stat training → available in remaining time slots

New Game Plus: Metaphor has a NG+ mode that carries over Archetype progress, money, and key items. If you feel time-pressured on your first run, know that a second run is significantly faster.

Beginner Tips

  1. Analyze every new enemy type. The Analyze skill reveals weaknesses. Knowing a weakness means efficient combat throughout the dungeon — guessing costs turns and resources.
  1. Overworld cancel weak enemies. If you can one-shot them in the overworld corridor, do it. Dungeon floors with 20 weak enemies can be cleared in 5 minutes instead of 30 if you use overworld attacks aggressively.
  1. Talk to everyone in new towns. NPCs frequently trigger Follower storylines, which unlock new Archetypes. Walking past NPCs in a new region means missing optional Archetypes permanently.
  1. Manage your Manas (MP items) before dungeons. Unlike some JRPGs, Manas are plentiful and affordable. Do not ration them — a full MP bar in a boss fight is always worth the cost.
  1. Inherit key skills across Archetypes. Once you unlock Synthesis or a powerful passive from an Archetype, inherit it into your active Archetype immediately. Inheritance is free and resets freely.
  1. The tutorial dungeon is not the difficulty floor. Metaphor scales up. If the first dungeon felt easy, the second and third introduce enemies with resistance patterns and harder one-shot mechanics. Invest in Archetype diversity early.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Metaphor: ReFantazio on PC Game Pass? Yes. Metaphor: ReFantazio was added to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate (PC) at launch in October 2024. The Game Pass version is functionally identical to the Steam version.

Does Metaphor: ReFantazio have Denuvo? No. Unlike some previous Atlus PC titles, Metaphor: ReFantazio has no Denuvo DRM. The game runs offline after activation.

How long is Metaphor: ReFantazio? A first playthrough is 75–110 hours depending on how thoroughly you pursue Follower storylines and optional Archetypes. A completionist run targeting all Followers and all Archetype masteries runs 100–130 hours. New Game Plus is significantly shorter.

Do I need to have played Persona to understand Metaphor? No. Metaphor is a standalone setting with no connection to Persona lore. The gameplay structure is familiar to Persona players, but the story, characters, and world are entirely original. It is a good entry point for players new to Atlus games.

What is the recommended difficulty? Normal is the intended experience and provides the right level of challenge for players with JRPG experience. If you have played Persona 5 on Merciless, Metaphor's Hard difficulty is comparable. There is a Safe difficulty for players who want the story without challenging encounters.

Does the game support ultrawide monitors (21:9)? Yes. 21:9 and 32:9 are supported in native resolution. The HUD and menus scale appropriately. Cutscenes are rendered in 21:9 without letterboxing.

Can I mod Metaphor: ReFantazio on PC? Yes. The absence of Denuvo makes modding straightforward. The Nexus Mods community has active Metaphor mods for visual tweaks, Archetype rebalancing, and quality-of-life improvements. The modding ecosystem is smaller than Persona 5 Royal's but growing.

Is New Game Plus worth it? Yes — especially for completionists. NG+ carries over Archetype progress (so you can reach Elite tiers faster), money, and key items. The story pacing is much faster in NG+ because you already know the calendar deadlines. Many players do a full-completion run on NG+.
