Meta description
Game updates in GameLoop work differently depending on how you installed the game. This guide covers every update method — in-app, Google Play, APK, and GameLoop's own game library — plus every common update error fixed.
The Update Confusion: Why This Is Complicated
GameLoop isn't just an emulator — it has its own built-in game library for titles like CODM, PUBG Mobile, and Free Fire. Games installed through that library update differently than games installed through Google Play.
Add to that the emulator itself getting updates, and you have three separate update systems players often confuse:
- GameLoop emulator updates — updating the GameLoop app itself
- Game library updates — CODM, PUBG Mobile, etc. installed via GameLoop's launcher
- Google Play game updates — games you installed manually through the Play Store inside GameLoop
This guide covers all three, plus every update error and how to fix it.
Part 1: Updating Games Installed via GameLoop's Built-in Library
GameLoop has a built-in launcher for its major supported titles (CODM, PUBG Mobile, Free Fire, Arena of Valor, etc.). These use a different update path than Google Play.
Method A: Update from the game launch page
- Open GameLoop (the main launcher)
- Find your game in the My Games tab or the main game list
- If an update is available, you'll see an Update button next to the game's launch button (instead of "Play")
- Click Update — GameLoop downloads the patch directly and installs it
- When complete, the button changes back to Play
This is the cleanest path and handles everything automatically.
Method B: Update from inside the game
For games like CODM and PUBG Mobile, the game itself often detects a new version when you launch it:
- Click Play in GameLoop to launch the game
- The game's own loading screen shows an update prompt: "New version available — Update now"
- Click Update (or "确定" / "OK") — the game downloads its own patch
- Progress bar shows download + install
- Game restarts into the updated version
This in-game update pulls files from the game's own servers (Tencent CDN for CODM/PUBG Mobile, Garena for Free Fire), not from GameLoop's servers.
Method C: Check for updates manually
If you don't see an update prompt but suspect the game is outdated:
- In GameLoop, go to My Games
- Right-click on the game (or click the three-dot menu ···)
- Select Check for Updates or Repair / Update
- GameLoop checks the game's current version against the latest and downloads missing files if needed
Part 2: Updating Games Installed via Google Play
If you installed a game by opening Google Play inside GameLoop (rather than using GameLoop's game library), updates come through Google Play like on a regular Android device.
Automatic updates (default)
Google Play auto-updates apps by default when Wi-Fi is available. Inside GameLoop:
- Open GameLoop
- Navigate to the Google Play icon (in the app drawer or bottom toolbar)
- Sign in if prompted
- Google Play will show pending updates on its home screen, or check Manage apps and device → Updates available
Manual update via Google Play
- Open Google Play inside GameLoop
- Tap your profile picture (top right) → Manage apps and device
- Under Updates available, find your game
- Tap Update next to it, or tap Update all to update everything at once
Update a specific game
- Open Google Play
- Search for the game by name
- On its store page, if an update is available, the button shows Update instead of Open
- Tap Update
Part 3: Updating the GameLoop Emulator Itself
Keeping GameLoop itself up to date is separate from game updates, but important — outdated emulator versions can cause game crashes, black screens, and compatibility failures after major game patches.
Check for GameLoop updates
- Open GameLoop
- Click the Settings gear icon (top right of the GameLoop launcher)
- Go to About GameLoop (or About)
- Click Check for Updates
- If an update is available, click Update and let the process complete
GameLoop will download the new installer and walk you through the update. It usually requires closing the emulator and running the update process — this takes 3–10 minutes.
Alternative: Download fresh from official source
If GameLoop's built-in updater fails:
- Visit the official GameLoop website (gl.gameloop.com)
- Download the latest installer
- Run it over your existing installation — this updates the emulator without deleting your game data
Part 4: Update Errors and Fixes
"Update failed" / "Download failed"
Cause: Network interruption, server-side issue, or insufficient disk space.
Fix:
- Check your internet connection — try loading a website to confirm it's working
- Check available disk space: GameLoop updates often need 2–10 GB free. Go to My Computer and check your C: drive
- Pause your antivirus temporarily — some antivirus software blocks GameLoop's download process
- Try updating at a different time — CODM and PUBG Mobile update servers get congested right after a major patch releases
"Verification failed" or "File corrupt"
Cause: A partially downloaded update left corrupt files.
Fix:
- In GameLoop, find the game → right-click → Repair
- The repair scan finds corrupt or missing files and re-downloads only those
- This is faster than a full reinstall and preserves your settings
Game launches but shows old version / can't connect to servers
Cause: The game client is outdated (game version doesn't match server version), but GameLoop's launcher still shows it as "up to date."
Fix:
- Force a version check: close the game → right-click in GameLoop's game list → Check for Updates → Update
- If that shows "already up to date" but you still can't connect, try Repair instead
- If repair doesn't work, uninstall and reinstall the game (your account data is cloud-saved, so you won't lose progress)
"Not enough disk space" error during update
Fix:
- Free up space on the drive where GameLoop is installed (usually C:)
- Delete old game files for games you no longer play: GameLoop launcher → My Games → right-click game → Uninstall
- Empty Recycle Bin
- Clear the GameLoop download cache: Settings → Storage → Clear Cache
Google Play won't update games / shows "pending" forever
Cause: Google Play services inside the emulator are stalled or the account needs reauthorization.
Fix:
- Inside GameLoop, go to Settings → Apps → Google Play Store → Force Stop, then reopen Google Play
- If that doesn't work, sign out of your Google account inside the emulator and sign back in
- Check that your date and time in Windows are accurate — Google Play authentication fails when the system clock is wrong
"Update available but won't download" (CODM specifically)
CODM has a known behavior where the in-game update prompt appears but tapping "Update" does nothing or hangs.
Fix:
- Close CODM completely
- Go to GameLoop launcher → CODM → three-dot menu → Update
- Let the update run from the launcher rather than from inside the game
- If the launcher also fails, try Repair first — CODM's servers sometimes reject partial downloads
How to Know Which Update Method Your Game Uses
A quick reference:
| Game | Where it was installed | Update method |
|---|---|---|
| Call of Duty: Mobile | GameLoop built-in library | GameLoop launcher update button OR in-game prompt |
| PUBG Mobile | GameLoop built-in library | GameLoop launcher update button OR in-game prompt |
| Free Fire | GameLoop built-in library | GameLoop launcher update button OR in-game prompt |
| Clash of Clans | Google Play (installed manually) | Google Play → Manage apps |
| Any other game | Google Play | Google Play → Manage apps |
| Games sideloaded via APK | Manual | Download new APK and install over existing |
Updating Games Installed via APK (Sideloaded)
If you installed a game by dragging an APK file into GameLoop rather than going through GameLoop's library or Google Play, updates require the same process:
- Download the updated APK from the same source you used originally
- Drag and drop it onto the GameLoop window (or use Install APK in GameLoop's sidebar)
- Android will detect it's an update for an existing app and install over the current version
- Your app data is preserved
Caution: Only sideload APKs from trusted sources. Modded APKs from unverified sites often contain malware or trigger game anti-cheat.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Why does my game say "update available" when GameLoop says it's up to date? A: The game's own servers may have a newer patch than what GameLoop's library shows. Use the in-game update prompt — it pulls from the game's CDN, not from GameLoop.
Q: Will updating the game delete my account progress? A: No. Game progress is stored on the game's servers (tied to your Tencent/Activision/Garena account), not locally. Updates only change the game client files, not your account data.
Q: My update is stuck at 99% — what do I do? A: 99% stuck is almost always a verification step that's hanging. Wait 5 minutes — it often completes on its own. If it stays stuck, cancel, close GameLoop completely, restart, and start the update again. The download resumes from where it left off.
Q: Does updating a game reset my keymapping settings? A: Not normally. Keymapping settings are stored separately from game files. However, major game updates occasionally change UI layouts enough that your existing keymaps stop working correctly — you may need to re-align them.
Q: How do I know when an update is available? A: GameLoop checks automatically when you open it. The game list shows an "Update" badge on any game with a pending update. For Google Play games, Google Play sends a notification (if notifications are enabled in the emulator).
Q: Can I play online while the update is downloading? A: No — you can't play a game while it's updating. However, you can play a different game on a different instance while one game updates (using Multi-Instance).
Q: The update says it needs 8 GB but I only have 5 GB free. What do I do? A: Uninstall games you don't play to free up space. Alternatively, delete GameLoop's temporary files: GameLoop Settings → Storage → Clear Temp Files. If you're consistently running low on space, consider moving GameLoop's installation to a secondary drive with more room.
Q: Is it safe to interrupt an update? A: Yes — GameLoop (and most games) use resumable downloads. If you close GameLoop mid-update, it resumes from the last checkpoint the next time you start the update. It's better to let updates complete in one session if possible, but interruptions don't corrupt anything.
Keeping Everything Updated: Best Practice
A quick maintenance routine that prevents most update issues:
- Once a week: Open GameLoop launcher → check for any emulator updates → apply if available
- When you see a game update prompt: Update immediately rather than dismissing it — playing on an outdated client causes server connection errors
- After a major game season launch: CODM and PUBG Mobile season patches are large (3–8 GB). Do these on a good connection, not mobile hotspot
- After a Windows update: Occasionally Windows updates interfere with Hyper-V / virtualization. If GameLoop stops working after a Windows update, reinstall or repair the emulator
