Final Fantasy XIV is Square Enix's flagship MMORPG with over 35 million registered players. It runs as a standalone client (not on Steam by default), has a famously generous free trial, and regularly generates performance questions around its aging-but-solid engine. This guide covers everything from first download to smooth gameplay.

FFXIV is more CPU-bound than GPU-bound in populated areas (cities, duties). A fast single-core CPU matters more than raw multi-thread performance.

Download & Install

  1. Go to finalfantasyxiv.comDownload Free Trial
  2. Run the installer (~900 MB) — it downloads the full game post-install (~80 GB)
  3. Create a free Square Enix Account if you don't have one
  4. Launch the game, log in, and you're on the Free Trial automatically

Option B — Steam

  1. Search "Final Fantasy XIV Online" on Steam → Install the Free Trial
  2. You still need a Square Enix Account — link it on first launch
  3. Important: Steam purchases and Square Enix direct purchases are separate accounts. Do not mix them. If you start on Steam, stay on Steam.

Updating the Game

FFXIV auto-updates through its launcher. If the launcher shows "Checking for updates…" for more than 5 minutes, close it, disable any VPN, and relaunch.

Fixing Common Problems

Low FPS in Limsa Lominsa / Ul'dah (Cities)

The main cities are CPU-heavy due to player count and character rendering.

  1. Reduce Crowd Density to Low or Medium in settings
  2. Set Character Rendering Resolution to Low (Settings → Graphics → Character)
  3. Enable Use Low-Poly Models When Occluded — reduces CPU load significantly
  4. Close Discord overlay + any screen-capture tools while in busy areas

Black Screen on Launch / DirectX Error

  1. Right-click the FFXIV launcher → Run as Administrator
  2. Settings (gear icon in launcher) → DirectX Version → Try DirectX 11 if on DirectX 9, or vice versa
  3. Reinstall the Visual C++ redistributables (2019 x64) from Microsoft's site
  4. If on AMD GPU: update to the latest Adrenalin driver

"Unable to Complete Version Check" / Launcher Stuck

Disconnected Mid-Game (Error 2002)

Error 2002 = world congestion or server timeout. Most common during new patch launches.

Controller Not Working

FFXIV has native gamepad support.

  1. Character Configuration → Gamepad → Enable Gamepad
  2. Set button layout to "Type B" for Xbox/PS-style controllers
  3. For PS5 DualSense: use DS4Windows or Steam Input to map it as a generic gamepad

Can't Use the Marketboard / Send Tells (Free Trial)

These features are intentionally locked on the Free Trial. To unlock: subscribe at finalfantasyxiv.com/account. Your character and progress carry over seamlessly.

Getting Started — The Right Way

Don't Skip the MSQ (Main Scenario Quests)

FFXIV is a story-first MMORPG. The MSQ (marked with a meteor icon) is mandatory to unlock most content — dungeons, trials, raids, housing, the next zone. Following it in order is the correct path.

New player mistake: running only side quests hoping to level faster. The MSQ levels you fast enough, and everything else is locked behind it anyway.

Job Selection

FFXIV calls classes "Jobs." Every player starts as an Adventurer and picks a starting job.

RoleBeginner-Friendly JobsWhat You Do
TankPaladin, GunbreakerHold boss aggro, face enemies away from party
HealerWhite Mage, SageKeep party alive, some DPS between heals
DPS (melee)Monk, Dragoon, SamuraiHigh mobility, positional attacks
DPS (ranged)Bard, Dancer, MachinistSafe, no positionals, party buffs
DPS (magic)Black Mage, Summoner, Red MageHigh damage, more complex rotation

For new players: Paladin (tank) or White Mage (healer) if you want to learn the game's mechanics. Bard or Dancer for relaxed ranged DPS with no positionals.

You can switch jobs at any time by equipping a different weapon. One character = all jobs.

Performance Tools (Advanced)

XIVLauncher (Unofficial but Widely Used)

goatcorp/FFXIVQuickLauncher — faster login, plugin support, and fixes for common launcher issues. Used by millions of players. Not banned by Square Enix (they tolerate it). Plugins like Dalamud add features like customizable UI, damage meters (ACT), and cooldown trackers.

ACT (Advanced Combat Tracker)

For players who want to analyze their DPS rotation:

GShade / ReShade

Data Centers & World Selection

FFXIV has multiple data centers by region:

You can visit any world in your data center freely. Crossing data centers (e.g., NA to EU) is possible with World Visit but has restrictions (no retainer access, limited Marketboard).

Pick the data center closest to you geographically for lowest ping. Within NA, all data centers are roughly equivalent latency-wise from the US East Coast; West Coast players prefer Aether or Crystal.

FAQ

Q: Is FFXIV worth starting in 2026? A: Yes. The free trial is one of the best free-game offers in existence, and the player population is healthy — Square Enix reported 35M+ registered accounts. The game is regularly updated (patches every ~3.5 months) and Dawntrail (2024 expansion) brought significant visual and content upgrades.

Q: How big is the download? A: ~80 GB for the base game + all expansions up to Dawntrail. Keep an SSD slot open.

Q: Does FFXIV run on Mac? A: There is a native Mac client, but it runs at lower performance than the Windows version. Most Mac players use Boot Camp (Intel Mac) or CrossOver (Apple Silicon). The Mac client is officially supported but often lags one patch cycle behind.

Q: Will I get banned for using XIVLauncher? A: No documented bans for XIVLauncher or Dalamud plugins. Square Enix has been silent on third-party tools but has not taken enforcement action. Using DPS meters in Party Finder groups is a community-enforced etiquette issue (some groups require it, some prohibit it), not a bannable offense by itself.

Q: What happens to my Free Trial character when I subscribe? A: Nothing changes. Your character, progress, inventory, and achievements carry over seamlessly. Subscribing unlocks the previously restricted features.
