What Is Factorio?
Factorio is a top-down factory-building and automation game where you crash-land on an alien planet and must build an automated factory capable of launching a rocket into space — all while defending against waves of native aliens called biters. Every item in the game can be automated: ore mining, smelting, crafting, circuit assembly, and research. The challenge is managing logistics, power, and production throughput as your factory scales from a few machines to a sprawling, belt-driven mega-complex.
Released by Czech studio Wube Software in 2020 (after five years of Early Access), Factorio is one of the most acclaimed strategy games ever made. The Space Age expansion (October 2024) adds interplanetary travel, space platforms you build in orbit, and four new planets — each with distinct mechanics — making it the largest content addition in the game's history.
Price: $35 base game / $50 Space Age expansion / $75 bundle on Steam. No microtransactions, no DRM, no online-only requirement. Buy once, play forever. The demo is free on Steam.
System Requirements
| Tier | CPU | GPU | RAM | Storage |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Minimum | Intel Core i3 / AMD Ryzen 3, 2016+ | GTX 750 Ti / RX 460 | 4 GB | 3 GB (HDD ok) |
| Recommended | Intel Core i5 / AMD Ryzen 5, 2018+ | GTX 1060 / RX 580 | 8 GB | 3 GB SSD |
| High-end megabases | Intel Core i7/i9 (high single-thread GHz) | GTX 1080 / RX 6700 | 16 GB | SSD mandatory |
Key hardware notes:
- Factorio is CPU-bound, not GPU-bound. Single-core clock speed matters more than core count — the game's Update Per Second (UPS) calculation is largely single-threaded.
- For megabases (10,000+ entities), an i9 or Ryzen 9 with high clock speeds is the difference between 60 UPS and 20 UPS.
- GPU matters only for rendering, which is rarely the bottleneck.
- 3 GB is the installed size. Your save files grow as your factory grows (expect 10–200 MB for active saves).

Graphics Settings Guide
Factorio's graphics settings have minimal FPS impact compared to its UPS (simulation ticks per second). Prioritize UPS over FPS.
| Setting | Recommendation | Impact |
|---|---|---|
| Fullscreen | On | Minor |
| Resolution | Native | Cosmetic |
| Video memory usage | High if ≥8GB VRAM | Texture quality |
| Texture quality | High (rarely affects FPS) | Visual |
| Light resolution | Normal (reduce if FPS low) | Moderate |
| Smoke rendering | Off | +5–10% FPS, no gameplay impact |
| Animated water | Off | Minor FPS |
| Color blind mode | Optional | Accessibility |
| Max UPS | 60 (default, do not raise) | Simulation stability |
| Max FPS | 60 or uncapped | Battery/heat tradeoff |
The key metric: watch the UPS counter (F4 → Show FPS/UPS). A healthy factory runs at 60 UPS. As your factory grows, UPS drops — at 30 UPS the game feels sluggish; at 20 UPS it's barely playable. When UPS drops, the problem is your factory design, not your GPU.
First Hour: What to Do
Factorio has a learning curve. The in-game tutorials (Campaign) teach the basics but don't prepare you for the full freeplay experience. Here is the fastest route to self-sufficiency:
Step 1: Complete the Campaign (30–60 min)
Play "New Game → Campaign → First Steps." This teaches: resource gathering, belts, inserters, furnaces, research, and basic combat. Don't skip it — many concepts (like inserter hand-size) are invisible unless explained.
Step 2: Start Freeplay with these settings
- Map type: Standard (default)
- Enemies: Peaceful (for first run — removes biters so you can focus on building)
- Resources: Rich (doubles resource patches; less walking, more building)
- Map size: Huge
Step 3: The first 10 priorities in order
| Priority | Why |
|---|---|
| 1. Mine coal + iron + copper manually | Your first materials |
| 2. Build 5x stone furnaces | Smelt ore into plates |
| 3. Craft burner inserters + transport belts | Automate ore feeding |
| 4. Build a coal-powered electric setup | Power → mechanical miners |
| 5. Research automation (Red Science) | Unlocks assembly machines |
| 6. Build assembly machines for iron gears + green circuits | Core intermediate items |
| 7. Research Logistics (Blue Science) | Unlocks more belts + inserters |
| 8. Build your first automated belt network | Get ore/plates flowing |
| 9. Research Military (before biters arrive) | Turrets + ammo |
| 10. Launch first satellite → then rocket | Endgame goal |
Core Systems Explained
Transport Belts
Belts carry items. Three tiers: yellow (15 items/s) → red (30 items/s) → blue (45 items/s). Always use compressed (full) belts for efficiency. Splitters distribute items evenly; underground belts pass below obstacles.
Beginner mistake: using too many different belt tiers. Stick to yellow belts for your first 10 hours — add red only where you have bottlenecks.
Inserters
Inserters move items from belts to machines (or vice versa). Burner inserters use fuel; electric inserters use power. Stack inserter (late-game) moves 12 items per swing — use these on blue belt inputs.
Assembly Machines
Assemble intermediate items (gears, circuits, engines) and final products. Three tiers: Tier 1 = 0.5 crafting speed; Tier 2 = 0.75; Tier 3 = 1.25. Always upgrade to Tier 3 when possible.
Research (Science Packs)
Research unlocks everything. Science packs are the fuel:
| Pack | Color | What it unlocks |
|---|---|---|
| Automation | Red | Assembly machines, power poles |
| Logistics | Green | Belts, inserters, storage |
| Military | Gray | Turrets, walls, ammo |
| Chemical | Blue | Oil processing, plastic, batteries |
| Production | Purple | Modules, beacons, productivity |
| Utility | Yellow | Robots, modules, construction |
| Space Science | White | Final research tier |
Power Grid
Coal-powered steam engines early; solar panels mid-game; nuclear reactors late-game. Power outages cascade — your inserters stop, belts stop, everything freezes. Always maintain 20–30% power buffer. Accumulators store solar energy for night.
Oil Processing
Oil is the biggest complexity spike. Cracking petroleum gas and heavy oil into lighter products requires chemical plants, storage tanks, and careful throughput balancing. Tip: advance oil processing unlocks cracking — research it immediately when available.
Logistics Bots
Unlock via Logistics research. Construction bots build/deconstruct blueprints automatically. Logistics bots ferry items between requester and provider chests. A well-designed bot network replaces many belt runs. Roboports power and recharge bots.
Pollution & Biters
Each factory generates pollution that spreads on the map. Biters evolve and attack when their nests are within your pollution cloud. Walls + gun turrets (fed by ammo belt) are the standard defense. Flame turrets are excellent mid-game. Artillery turrets (late-game) push biters back automatically.
Blueprint Book (Essential Tool)
Blueprints save factory layouts for copy-paste. Import community blueprints from factorioprints.com.
Must-have blueprint categories for beginners:
- Tileable science pack rows
- Train station templates (4-lane, stacker, roundabout)
- City-block megabase designs (1-chunk blocks)
- Smelting arrays (12 furnaces → compressed belt output)
To use a blueprint from factorioprints.com:
- Copy the blueprint string
- In-game: press B (Blueprint Library) → Import String → Paste → Confirm
- Blueprint appears in your library; drag to hotbar to use
Train Network (Mid to Late Game)
Trains are essential for resources at distance. Rail network basics:
| Term | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Station | Loading/unloading point (add wait condition: Inactivity 5s) |
| Signal | Controls one-way or two-way traffic |
| Chain signal | Used before intersections (never deadlock-prone alone) |
| Schedule | List of stations a train visits in sequence |
Deadlock prevention: always use chain signals before intersections and regular signals after. A common beginner mistake (regular signals on both sides of a crossing) causes permanent deadlock.
Performance Optimization (for Large Factories)
When UPS drops below 60, diagnose with the built-in profiler (F5):
| Problem | Fix |
|---|---|
| Entity update bottleneck | Merge belts into fewer longer belts; remove idle inserters |
| Train pathfinding | Reduce train count; simplify rail network |
| Circuit network | Limit combinators; avoid high-frequency pulse signals |
| Map reveal | Disable map chart updates (mod or settings) |
| Pollution spread | Green modules reduce pollution; reduce factory density |
Productivity modules: insert into assembly machines to get free output (10% prod = 10% free items). Net throughput gain is massive at scale. Mid-tier machines: speed modules everywhere + productivity modules in key assemblers.
Beacons: place beacons around assemblers to broadcast module effects to multiple machines. Speed beacon arrays (8× speed modules each) multiply throughput dramatically.
Multiplayer (Co-op)
Factorio supports co-op multiplayer with no player limit. One player hosts; others join via Steam Friends or direct IP.
- All players share the same factory in real-time
- Each player has their own inventory and character
- Admins can set permissions (allow construction/configure/destroy)
- Dedicated server option available (server binary in Steam tools)
- Latency does not desync the game (uses authoritative server model)
Best co-op roles: one player focuses on defense/walls, one on production layout, one on research queue and logistics design.
Mods (Steam Workshop)
Factorio has one of the best modding ecosystems in gaming. Install via in-game Mods menu (requires Wube login):
| Mod | What it adds |
|---|---|
| Bob's Mods | Massive overhaul: more ores, machines, complexity |
| Angel's Mods | Pairs with Bob's for 500+ hour megabase runs |
| Krastorio 2 | Mid-complexity overhaul, beginner-friendly |
| Space Exploration | Pre-Space Age interplanetary endgame (now partly replaced by Space Age DLC) |
| Rampant | Massively harder biters with tactical behavior |
| FNEI | Fluid / Not Enough Items — hover any item to see all recipes |
| Text Plates | Label your factory (highly recommended) |
| AutoTrash | Automatically trash items from inventory |
Beginner recommendation: play vanilla first. Mods add complexity that can overwhelm new players.
Space Age Expansion (2024) — What's New
Space Age transforms the endgame:
| Planet | Environment | Key mechanic |
|---|---|---|
| Nauvis | Home planet | Existing base; produces Space Science packs |
| Vulcanus | Volcanic, lava | Foundry machines; unlimited lava as ore source; demolishers (giant worms) |
| Fulgora | Lightning storms, scrap | Recycler machines; scrap → random items; lightning rods power your factory |
| Gleba | Living biomes | Bio-agriculture; crops rot if not harvested; Pentapods attack |
| Aquilo | Ice, ammonia | Heating fuel mandatory; pipe freeze risk; most challenging planet |
| Space Platform | Orbit | Build a platform between planets; space science production |
How interplanetary travel works: research Rockets, build a rocket silo on Nauvis, launch a cargo rocket to a new planet. Your character can ride the rocket. Planets have distinct tech trees unlocked by their specific science packs.
New machines:
- Foundry (Vulcanus): high-throughput ore smelting
- Recycler (Fulgora): recycles items into components at 25% rate — the basis of Fulgoran loops
- Biochamber (Gleba): grows biological products (eggs, bioflux, carbon fiber)
- Cryogenic Plant (Aquilo): processes ammonia + ice
Troubleshoot Table
| Problem | Fix |
|---|---|
| Game launches but no graphics | Update GPU drivers; try --no-opengl launch flag |
| Very low UPS (below 30) | Reduce factory scale; apply performance mods; upgrade CPU |
| Map won't load (desync in MP) | Ensure same mod list + versions; verify game files |
| Biters attacking immediately | Enable "peaceful mode" in map settings on new game; not retroactive |
| Research not progressing | Check science lab inputs — all required packs must feed simultaneously |
| Inserters not working | Check power; inserters need electricity (non-burner types) |
| Belt is not full (bottleneck) | Trace back to source machine; inserter hand-size or machine count is limiting |
| Oil setup not working | Check pump directions (flow arrows); ensure cracking is researched |
| Train won't move | Check for signals without a clear path; check fuel in engine |
| Save file very large | Normal for megabases; SSD recommended for quick load times |
