What Is Enshrouded?
Enshrouded is a survival action RPG developed by Keen Games, released in Early Access on January 24, 2024. The game sold over 3 million copies in its first month — one of the fastest-selling Early Access titles in Steam history. It has since received multiple major content updates.
The premise: the world of Embervale has been overtaken by a deadly fog called the Shroud. You play as a Flameborn, one of the few survivors who can survive inside the Shroud for limited periods. Your goal is to explore, fight, craft, build, and ultimately cleanse the world of this corruption.
The game blends survival, open-world RPG, base building, and co-op into a single seamless experience.
Enshrouded System Requirements
| Minimum | Recommended | High Settings | |
|---|---|---|---|
| OS | Windows 10 64-bit | Windows 10/11 64-bit | Windows 11 64-bit |
| CPU | Intel Core i5-6600K / AMD Ryzen 5 1600 | Intel Core i7-8700K / AMD Ryzen 5 3600X | Intel Core i9-12900K / AMD Ryzen 9 5900X |
| RAM | 16 GB | 16 GB | 32 GB |
| GPU | NVIDIA GTX 1070 / AMD RX 5500 XT 8GB | NVIDIA RTX 2080 / AMD RX 6700 XT | NVIDIA RTX 3080 / AMD RX 6800 XT |
| VRAM | 8 GB | 8 GB | 10 GB+ |
| Storage | 60 GB SSD | 60 GB NVMe SSD | 60 GB NVMe SSD |
| DirectX | DirectX 12 | DirectX 12 | DirectX 12 |
Key notes:
- An SSD is effectively mandatory — the game streams world data on the fly; HDD causes severe stuttering
- 8 GB VRAM is the real minimum at 1080p; 6 GB GPUs (GTX 1060, RX 580) will run but with texture quality limitations and occasional VRAM hitching
- The game is CPU-intensive when building large structures — a 6th-gen or older CPU will bottleneck

How Enshrouded Works — Core Systems
The Shroud
The Shroud is the game's central mechanic — a deadly fog covering large portions of the map. The Shroud works as follows:
- Shroud Timer: You have a limited time inside the Shroud before your health begins to drain. The base timer is 4 minutes; this can be extended significantly with upgrades.
- Shroud Roots: Large corrupted plant structures that feed the Shroud's spread. Destroy them to permanently clear Shroud from an area.
- Shroud Tunnels: Portals hidden within the Shroud that let you navigate between its areas.
The rhythm of the game: explore outside the Shroud → dive in for high-value loot → clear roots to expand your safe territory → repeat at higher levels.
The Flame Altar
The Flame Altar is your base's core structure — the equivalent of a workbench, bed, and spawn point combined. It controls:
- Your respawn location when you die
- Your territory radius — the area you can build in expands as you upgrade the Altar
- Fast travel via Flame Altar network (you can place and upgrade multiple Altars)
Upgrading the Flame Altar is the primary progression gate — it unlocks new crafting stations, increases your Shroud timer, and expands buildable territory.
Classes and Skills
Enshrouded uses a flexible class system where you choose your background at character creation but can shift playstyle freely through the Skill Tree:
| Class | Primary Stat | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Ranger | Dexterity | Bow builds, critical hits, long-range |
| Mage | Intelligence | Magic staffs, elemental damage |
| Warrior | Strength | Melee weapons, shields, tanking |
| Survivor | No focus | Mixed crafting and generalist play |
| Trickster | Dexterity/Intelligence | Fast weapons, debuffs |
Your class choice affects starting stats but not your long-term playstyle — the skill tree is open enough that any class can access any weapon type.
Skill Tree: A large branching tree with passive bonuses, active abilities, and stat upgrades. You earn Skill Points by leveling up (via XP from enemies, crafting, and exploration). Points can be reset for a small cost.
Survivors (NPCs)
Scattered across the world, locked in magical stasis pods, are Survivors — NPCs who were preserved before the Shroud spread. Finding and freeing them assigns them to your base, where they unlock new crafting options:
| Survivor | Unlocks |
|---|---|
| Blacksmith | Advanced weapons, metal armor, tools |
| Hunter | Bows, arrows, leather armor, traps |
| Alchemist | Potions, bombs, magical reagents |
| Farmer | Crop growing, food buffs |
| Carpenter | Advanced building pieces, furniture |
| Mage | Magic staffs, spells, enchanting |
Finding Survivors is a core early-game goal — each one dramatically expands what you can craft.
Beginner's Guide — First Session Priority
The First Hour
- Follow the story quest — it's the fastest way to get your Flame Altar placed and your first shelter built
- Collect everything — wood, stone, and plant fiber are used in enormous quantities early
- Place your Flame Altar on flat ground — preferably near water and trees for resource access
- Build a roof and walls before focusing on crafting stations — nighttime enemies attack bases without cover
- Find the Blacksmith's pod early — the Blacksmith is the most important early Survivor, located southeast of the starting area in Longkeep
Resource Priority (first few hours)
| Resource | Critical For | How to Get |
|---|---|---|
| Wood Logs | Base building, fuel | Chop trees |
| Stone | Base building, crafting | Hit rocks with pickaxe |
| Shroud Spores | Early crafting recipes | Collected inside the Shroud |
| Plant Fiber | Rope, bandages | Gather plants |
| Resin | Glue, crafting | Hit certain trees |
| Copper Ore | First metal tier | Mining copper deposits (yellow rocks) |
Leveling strategy
- Explore beyond what the main quest requires — side dungeons and Shroud areas give substantial XP
- Crafting gives XP — building your base and crafting items actively levels your character
- Enemy scaling in Enshrouded is area-based, not level-based — some zones are much harder than they look. If you're dying repeatedly, go explore elsewhere and come back stronger.
- Shroud Roots give excellent XP and permanently expand your territory — prioritize clearing them near your base
Multiplayer Co-op
Enshrouded supports up to 16 players in co-op on a hosted world. This is unusually large for the genre.
How to set up co-op:
- The Host creates a world and starts it
- Guests join via the Friends list in-game, or via a direct invite link
- All players share the world, base, and progression
- Guests can continue playing even when the Host is offline (with a dedicated server setup)
Dedicated Server: Enshrouded has an official dedicated server tool on Steam (free, separate app). This lets you run a 24/7 server so your group can play without a host needing to be present. Setup takes about 20 minutes via Steam.
Co-op tip: One player focusing on building and Survivor recovery while others focus on combat and exploration is the most efficient early division of labor.
Troubleshooting Common Issues
| Problem | Solution |
|---|---|
| Severe stuttering on first launch | Wait for shader compilation to complete (5–15 minutes after first launch) before judging performance |
| Low FPS despite good GPU | Set Shadow Quality to Medium, GI to Off/Low. The game is demanding — these are the biggest levers |
| Game crashes on startup | Update GPU drivers. Right-click Enshrouded in Steam → Properties → Local Files → Verify Integrity |
| HDD stuttering / constant loading | Move the game to an SSD. This is the most common cause of the issue |
| Black screen on launch | Try setting launch options in Steam: right-click → Properties → Launch Options → type -dx12 |
| Co-op connection issues | Ensure Windows Firewall allows Enshrouded. Open UDP port 15636 in router settings for dedicated servers |
| VRAM exceeded / crashing | Lower Texture Quality to Medium. Close browser tabs and background apps consuming VRAM |
| Can't find Survivors | Survivors are in specific story locations. Check the map for orange pillars of light — these mark Survivor pods |

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Enshrouded fully released or Early Access? As of mid-2026, Enshrouded is still in Early Access on Steam, though it has received substantial content updates since launch and plays like a complete game. The full release is planned but no firm date has been set.
Do I lose progress if I don't play for a while? No. Your save is persistent. Unlike games like Rust, Enshrouded has no server wipes. Your world and progress remain exactly as you left it.
What's the best class for beginners? The Ranger class is recommended for new players — the bow allows ranged combat, which is safer while learning enemy attack patterns. The Warrior is also strong if you prefer melee.
Can I play solo, or do I need friends? Enshrouded is excellent solo. The game is balanced for solo play, and the Shroud timer, enemy difficulty, and crafting progression all work without a group. Many players prefer solo.
Is the game complete enough to be worth buying in Early Access? Yes. Enshrouded had a full story arc, five biomes, all core systems, and dozens of hours of content at Early Access launch. The roadmap includes additional biomes, expanded story, and more Survivors.
How long is the game? A first playthrough takes 30–60 hours depending on how much you explore vs. rush the story. Completionists will spend 100+ hours. Building alone can occupy hundreds of hours.
Does Enshrouded run on the Steam Deck? Enshrouded is rated "Playable" on Steam Deck by Valve. It requires FSR upscaling to maintain acceptable frame rates. Expect 30–45 FPS on medium-low settings at 800p.
Is there a mobile version? No. Enshrouded is PC-only via Steam.
